After all, we discovered the laws of nature, lengthened and enriched our lives, and set out the benchmarks for rationality itself. We actually think in ways that are sensible in the low-tech contexts in which we spend most of our lives, but fail to take advantage of the powerful tools of reasoning we’ve discovered over the millennia: logic, critical thinking, probability, correlation and causation, and optimal ways to update beliefs and commit to choices individually and with others. Pinker rejects the cynical cliché that humans are simply irrational - cavemen out of time saddled with biases, fallacies, and illusions. How can a species that developed vaccines for COVID-19 in less than a year produce so much fake news, medical quackery, and conspiracy theorizing? Today humanity is reaching new heights of scientific understanding - and also appears to be losing its mind. Can reading a book make you more rational? Can it help us understand why there is so much irrationality in the world? Steven Pinker, author of Enlightenment Now (Bill Gates’ "new favorite book of all time”) answers all the questions here. This is the second of a trio of wolf stories in The Bloody Chamber, and perhaps the most controversial because of the ways in which the adolescent Little Red Riding Hood ‘tames’ the big bad wolf until she can happily share its bed. The story is notable for its reversal of Carter’s usual structure: here, it is a pure and innocent young man who is seduced by the more worldly wise female character, while he is travelling through Transylvania, the home of vampires.Įver since Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and arguably before with the works of Sheridan Le Fanu and others, the vampire has exuded a latent (or maybe even not-so-latent) eroticism, but Carter keeps us on our toes with this story, a thoughtful exploration of men and women’s different attitudes to sexuality and virginity. This is a vampire tale, and began life as a radio play, Vampirella, in 1976 Carter reworked the script into this story. Before going on to become a full time writer, Tracy enrolled herself at the Biblical University in Philadelphia.Īfter that, she joined the Rowan University and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in the subject of English Literature. Tracy started writing her first novel when she was just 8 years old, and since then, she has never stopped writing exciting novels on historical and biblical fiction. And with each of the novel that she writes today, she tries herself to open a similar door in her own world and invite the readers to get transported into a captivating world along with her. This filled her mind and body with a lot of thrill. Whenever she opened a new novel to read, it would feel her like she was going through the wardrobe once again. Particularly, the world Narnia developed an unbeatable passion in her heart towards the historical fiction world. She was very much impressed by the knights and dragons mentioned in those books. From a very early age, she had started reading books based on the creatures and settings of another world. The young man goes home in the second section and lives with his parents for a while, considering his future and reckoning with the potential death of this father. But as this first section comes to a close, the young man has long conversations with the sensei’s wife, and begins to understand there’s more under the surface than just placid isolation. As they talk about love, and marriage, and death, the young man seems to consider his own future. Through his persistence, they do in fact become friends and he realizes that this older friend experiences a kind of profound loneliness and isolation in the world, despite their friendship and despite the sensei’s marriage. He decides to befriend him, not out of sympathy or pity, but out of a kind of respect and intended emulation.
